Our shop is on 54th Street SW, inside Wyoming city limits, so this is the closest work we do. It is also a city built largely within one stretch of time, which means a great deal of its heating and cooling equipment is reaching the end of its life at roughly the same moment.
Much of Wyoming went up between the 1950s and the 1970s. That housing is well built, but the original ductwork was designed around furnaces far less efficient than anything sold today, and the systems installed to replace them in the 1990s are now themselves decades old. A lot of what we get called for here is a second replacement in a house whose duct design has never been revisited.
Dropping a modern high-efficiency furnace onto undersized 1960s ductwork is a reliable way to make a homeowner unhappy. Static pressure climbs, the blower fights the system, rooms at the end of the run stay cold, and the efficiency that was paid for never shows up on the bill. Checking the duct before quoting the equipment matters more here than almost anywhere in our service area.
Wyoming carries a dense band of light industrial and retail space running on rooftop units and commercial split systems. Those have different service intervals, different failure modes, and different access problems than residential work, and they generally cannot wait until the following week.
Wyoming shares the Grand Rapids climate with no real moderation from the lake: long, cold heating seasons and humid summers. Because so much of the housing is single story over a shallow basement, duct runs are short and systems respond quickly, which makes correct sizing more noticeable rather than less.
